The Mass Distribution in Low Surface Brightness Galaxies

چکیده

The distribution of the stellar and gaseous components in low surface brightness galaxies has been determined directly from optical and HI imaging. The distribution of what might be the dominant mass component, the dark matter, which is inferred from rotation curves, is far harder to determine. Although the rotation curves themselves can be determined fairly accurately from HI synthesis observations, and in particular from Hα spectroscopy, the uncertainty in the mass modeling leaves room for a wide range of possible dark matter distributions, ranging from maximum stellar disks with shallow dark halos to cuspy dark halos with little mass in stars.

Evaluation of New MOND Interpolating Function with Rotation Curves of Galaxies

The rotation curves of a sample of 46 low- and high-surface brightness galaxies are considered in the context of Milgrom's modi_ed dynamics (MOND) to test a new interpolating function proposed by Zhao et al. (2010) [1] and compare with the results of simple interpolating function. The predicted rotation curves are calculated from the total baryonic matter based on the B-band surface photometry,...

Testing the Dark Matter Hypothesis with Low Surface Brightness Galaxies and Other Evidence

The severity of the mass discrepancy in spiral galaxies is strongly correlated with the central surface brightness of the disk. Progressively lower surface brightness galaxies have ever larger mass discrepancies. No other parameter (luminosity, size, velocity, morphology) is so well correlated with the magnitude of the mass deficit. The rotation curves of low surface brightness disks thus provi...

The Formation of Low Surface Brightness Galaxies

The formation of low surface brightness galaxies is an unavoidable prediction of any hierarchical clustering scenario. In these models, low surface brightness galaxies form at late times from small initial overdensities, and make up most of the faint end of the galaxy luminosity function. Because there are tremendous observational biases against finding low surface brightness galaxies, the obse...

The Formation of Disk Galaxies

We present a scenario for the formation of disks which explains not only the properties of normal galaxies, but the properties of the population of low surface brightness galaxies (LSBs) as well. We use a gravitationally self-consistent model for disk collapse to calculate the observable properties of disk galaxies as a function of mass and angular momentum of the initial protogalaxy. The model...

Does Low Surface Brightness Mean Low Density?

We compare the dynamical properties of two galaxies at identical positions on the Tully-Fisher relation, but with different surface brightnesses. We find that the low surface brightness galaxy UGC 128 has a higher mass-to-light ratio, and yet has lower mass densities than the high surface brightness galaxy NGC 2403. This is true for the gas surface density, the stellar surface density, and the ...
